Is This The Year When Arsenal Come Good?

Is it time for Arsene's stars to shine?

For many years now we have been saying it’s a matter of time before Arsenal come good. Well after watching them grind out a result at Blackburn on Saturday maybe we won’t be waiting much longer.

The ability that Arsene Wenger’s side possess is in unquestionable. But so often the easy on the eye football hasn’t brought the required results.  But Arsenal seem to be devolving a greater resolve to their game which I suppose was inevitable the young starlets gained experience.

The likes Alex Song and Abou Diaby seem to have grown over the summer and look like they can add the support and protection for Cesc Fabregas to go on and be at his creative best.

Wenger’s major masterstroke though has been his policy over Fabregas. He made it clear that diminutive midfielder was not for sale, and what a boost it must have been for Arsenal not to lose their best player when a European superpower came calling.

But Fabregas also deserves severe praise for the way he has handled himself during the transfer saga that lasted nearly all summer. He made clear his intentions and that he wanted to leave, but has accepted Wenger’s decision. In an era of player power and reported strikes it makes a refreshing change to see somebody accept that they might not get the move they want.

I suspect Wenger has told his star midfielder that this is the year when Arsenal finally push to make a serious challenge for some honours.

Wenger’s movement in the transfer market backs up the faith he has in his squad. Arsenal brought in experienced French defender Sébastien Squillaci and fellow countrymen Laurent Koscielny  to add competition in the centre of defence. But asides from that Arsenal’s squad is pretty similar and Wenger has once again resisted temptation to splash the cash.

The result is seven points from a start that included tricky trips to Liverpool and Blackburn. I think if you had offered an Arsenal fan four points from them two trips they would have bit your hand off before the start of the campaign.

But the acid test still awaits for Wenger’s side. Have they got enough about them to go the distance and push for the title? Only time will tell, but early signs are good for the Gunners.

Will Arsenal Fans Finally See The Best Of Tomas Rosicky?

Theo Walcott’s hat-trick against Blackpool on Saturday assured that the young winger would grab the majority of the headlines, and rightly so, but Arsenal’s demolition of Blackpool was far from a one-man show.

Pulling the strings quietly and with an elegance and vision which seemed to had vanished last season after 18 months robbed to injury was Tomas Rosicky, or

Why Everton Will Risk Losing Steven Pienaar

Despite being in the last year of his contract and being the only Everton player not to sign a long-term deal in recent weeks, Steven Pienaar will apparently remain at Goodison Park for at least one more season. The club can continue contract talks with Pienaar until January, at which time he will be free to negotiate deals with any club and leave Everton on a free transfer in July.

Everton boss David Moyes appears to be taking a huge gamble by not selling Pienaar. The South African midfielder has attracted interest from multiple clubs this summer, and now would be the cash-strapped club’s last chance to make any money from his sale.

However, Moyes has plenty of reasons to let that transfer cash sit on the table

Is The 4-4-2 Finished?

Generally, football matches are won by the team with the better players. It’s not a game that upon first glance seems to lend itself to a great deal of tactics, a team just tries to send the ball to it’s most talented goal scorer by any legal means. Yet people like Jose Mourinho have taken sides like FC Porto to the top of Europe by using strategies that squeeze every ounce of potential from their players.

Something that can put a team over the top is the formation that it comes out with, for example lower ranked teams often crowd the midfield with five players when playing a top side, trying to congest the middle of the park and stop the opponent finding space to get into the final third. The midfielders are also in a good position to get back behind the ball if necessary. New Zealand went into the World Cup with a 4-3-3, a strongly aggressive formation that to many would just seem to invite thrashings for such a low ranked country. However, such positivity paid off and they finished with their highest ever point total.

In that same World Cup, England played a much maligned 4-4-2, criticized by almost everybody as a formation that cannot be used today, with the players having completely different skill sets than those of yesteryear. It is often pointed out that no other top sides play a 4-4-2.

Watching the Liverpool-Manchester City game, it’s easy to see why in this day and age the 4-4-2 simply cannot work. One need to look only as far as Spain, and how narrow they played, to see which way the game is going. The formation is built to beat teams that

Fox Soccer Channel Tackles Premier League: Video

I came across this new video spot for Fox Soccer Channel yesterday that I thought I’d share with you. It features footage that captures the mood and spirit of attending a Premier League game in England. Everything from the supporters making their way to the ground to Wayne Rooney provoking the crowd into hysterics.

The video was shot in Premier League grounds Stamford Bridge, Emirates Stadium and Old Trafford.

It’s possible that the video may not see the light of day. Or, it may be used in the future by Fox (I haven’t come across it on Fox Soccer Channel yet). The video was created by designer/director Guillermo Lecuona who has created main title sequences for primetime shows on every major television network, including Fox’s

Poll: Which Premier League Game Will Next Feature a 6-0 Scoreline?

A scoreline of six nil in the Premier League is more common now than a one nil. So far this season, we’ve seen four 6-0 scores and only two 1-0 results. Congratulations to Chelsea (2), Arsenal and Newcastle United for accomplishing this rare task. And commiserations to Wigan, West Bromwich Albion, Blackpool and Aston Villa.

But which match this weekend is the most likely to feature a 6-0 scoreline again? Vote in the poll and share your opinions in the comments section below.

Premier League Footballer of the Week, Gameweek 2

6-0, the new 1-0.Parity, maybe? Well, not really.

Three Barclays Premier League matches ended 6-0 this weekend with one still left to come Monday night. As the parity debate rages on concerning the overall quality of Premier League teams 1-20, gameweek 2 went a long way in proving just how unequal the league currently is, or did it?

Usual suspects Chelsea repeated their opening weekend thrashing of Nobody United while beautiful passing home boys Arsenal properly welcomed Tangerine Ltd. to the Premier League by the same score.

A plethora of goals were seen Saturday and Sunday would be no different. Sunday would also host the weekend’s best match that saw Fulham fail to capitulate after conceding a late OG and earn a well deserved draw against Manchester United.

After Aston Villa’s gameweek 1 victory over West Ham (who are having a horrid start), one could have been granted the freedom to assume they’d do something similar to the back-in-the-big-time-boys Newcastle United. This time, parity won. Newcastle were brilliant in all things football related on the day as Villa played as if they’d been out on a serious bender the night before. Surely not many Newcastle supporters or Premier League fans would have guessed the Toon could have pulled a Chelsea or Arsenal and post 6 against the boys from Birmingham. Welcome back Newcastle.

So, was parity the winner or is gameweek 2 still too early to tell how equal this league is from top to bottom? Flukes? Defenses still finding their cohesion? Or, the most uneven league in Europe?

How an American Influence Is Rubbing Off On Manchester City

Manchester City’s match day experience is becoming more and more American with each new season. While Maine Road was what you could expect a typical British experience of what it was like to see an English football match in the 80s, the City of Manchester Stadium experience seems as American as apple pie.

In previous seasons, City have tried to focus on improving the match-day experience. They’ve added buskers, i.e. public performers, around the ground to add to the atmosphere. And recently they’ve adopted American entertainment methods such as turning down the house lights before kick-off and trying to get everyone excited for the big match. They’ve also been a pioneer in English football in their usage of American social media sites such as Facebook, Foursquare, Flickr and others to create a bond with supporters.

And now for their first home match in the league for the 2010-11 season, against Liverpool tonight, they’re set to unveil two new features. Both of them have a uniquely American feel about them. Plus the club has launched a new campaign across Manchester, which is revealed below:

The first is City Square, an outdoor entertainment zone and the first of its kind, according to Manchester City, at a Premier League club.

Located on Joe Mercer Way, near the stadium, the zone will feature:

Giant media screens streaming live and specially-edited content,Summerbee and Star bar, featuring a dispenser that will pour multiple pints in seconds,Blue Moon Cafe, which will serve up traditional northern favorites with a twist,And it’s all underneath a waterproof canopy.
